We bring Indigenous languages into common technical computer programs, such as ArcGIS and AutoCad, so community documents can be saved and shared with communities in their language.
There are currently no technical (STEM, mapping, community plans etc.) programs available in Indigenous languages.
What we do
First and foremost, we bring Indigenous languages to existing, widely used products like AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
Working with our partners and communities, CanBraid allows users to customize existing programs, such as ArcGIS and AutoCAD, to languages used by First Nations, Inuit and Métis People so that they can produce key maps, building plans, and valuable community data in languages that are appropriate to the those it impacts most.
Even if you speak your heritage language every day, you will still be dependent on english / french to use computer programs. This means that Indigenous languages will not be used in a professional setting. Not only does this mean that Indigenous languages are not used in professional settings but also that Elders and community members are forced to not use their first language.
In addition, youth are forced to learn STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in English because, up until now, applications do not use Indigenous languages. This means that youth are at risk of losing their language because they are not using them at work and with their peers in a professional setting.
Without the prospect for being able to use a language in all aspects of their life, many youth do not see the value or the feasibility of learning their heritage language.
